Erodium ciconium (L.) L’Hér., it is an annual or biennial, procumbent to erect, caulescent, up to 60 cm tall, branched herb with deflexed and glandular hairs on furrowed stem and shoots. Leaves simple with up to 15 cm long, appresscd hairy petioles, lamina triangular-ovate to ovate-elliptic in outline, 1.5-10 x 1-7 cm, deeply uni or bi pinnatipartite or sect into ovate-lanceolate or linear-oblong, c. 1 cm or more long, crenate or incised, appressed hairy segments, rachis winged, dentate or lobed between the main segments; stipules ovate to lanceolate-ovate, 5-10 x 3-6 mm, brownish, acute-acuminate, pubescent. Inflorescence (2-) 3-6 (-8)-flowered, peduncle up to 12 cm long, mostly longer than the subtending leaf, angular, deflexed hairy. Flowers purple or purplish-violet, 1.5-2 cm across, pedicel 1-2 cm long, glandular hairy, bracts several, free, akin to stipules, 2-5 mm long, free, hairy. Sepals oblong, 5-10 x 2-3 mm, enlarging up to 15 x 5.5 mm in fruit, externally 5-nerved and glandular hairy, membranous margined, acute with 2-4 mm long mucro. Petals obovate, 8-10 x 2-4 mm, claw short, hairy. Fertile filaments dilated, ciliate. Sterile filaments lanceolate-ovate, ciliate-glabrescent. Mericarps greyish-black, 8-12 (-15) mm long, subpatcnt whitish hairy, apical pits narrow, deep and glandular hairy, each without basal furrow, beak stout, thick, (5-) 6-10 (-12) cm long, barbate.  Life Form: Th,   Flowering in: Mar-May,   Vern: Khlal el Ghula,   Phytochoria: ES+MED+IT , The native range of this species is Canary Islands, S. Central Europe, Medit. to Pakistan.   Notes: Wild in Libya.
