Gladiolus italicus Mill. / Heterotypic Synonyms: Gladiolus segetum Ker Gawl.,  it is a perennial plant 40-80 cm, glabrous, with globose bulb, tunic with slightly thick, parallel fibers, reticulated at the top, with oblong mesh, fairly robust stem, with 3-5 fairly wide leaves, couplet cluster, sub unilateral, with 6-10 large flowers, lower spathes often equal to the flower, perianth with upper division longer and wider, spaced from the oblong wedge-shaped laterals, anthers a little longer than the filament, with sub divergent auricles, stigmas attenuated from the base. Sub globose capsule with rounded corners. Seeds c. 3.5 x 3 x 2.2 mm, subtrigonous, very compressed laterally, with the lateral faces of a bright reddish ocher color and the margins with a somewhat paler tone. Seed surface rough on the lateral faces and colliculated on the margins and around the strophiolus.  Life Form: G,   Flowering in: Mar-Apr,   Vern: Sif El-Ghrab,   Phytochoria: MED+IT, The native range of this species is Macaronesia, Medit. to Central Asia.  Notes: Wild in Libya.
