Anacamptis papilionacea (L.) R.M.Bateman, Pridgeon & M.W.Chase / Homotypic Synonyms: Orchis papilionacea L., it is a tuberous geophyte, erect, glabrous herb. up to 40 cm. Tubers sub globular or ovoid, sub sessile. Basal leaves 5-10, forming a rosette, linear-lanceolate, oblong-lanceolate, or lanceolate, apiculate, cauline leaves largely sheathing, usually acuminate, passing into bracts. Inflorescence obovate to oblong, few 10 ± descnly-flowered. Bracts lanceolate or oval-lanceolate, 3-5-nevred, membranaccous, purplish, usually larger than the ovary.  Flowers spreading, large. Sepals oval-oblong or oval-lanceolate, obtuse or subapiculate, 3-5-nerved, sub equal, reddish-brown or purple. Petals linear-oblong or lanceolate, 3-5-nerved, reddish-brown or purple. Labellum shortly attenuates at base, orbicular to obovate, roundish, crenulate-dentale, deep red or rose-purple, enlire. Spur cylindrical, obliquely descendant, and obtuse or sub apiculate, somewhat shorter than the ovary, rosy or whitish-rosy. Gynostemium purple. Anther obovate, apiculate, lobes red, separated up to base, rostellum produced into a short beak, pollinia olive-green. Ovary cylindrical 1, twisted.
