Ophrys tenthredinifera Willd. / Heterotypic Synonyms: Ophrys rosea (Desf.) Dufour, it is a tuberous geophyte, glabrous, erect herb, up to 45 cm. Tuber sub globose or ovoid, sub sessile. Basal leaves 3-5, forming a rosette, oblong or oblong-lanceolate, pointed and apiculate, attenuate at base. Cauline leaves 2-4, reduced and largely sheathing. Inflorescence laxly few-flowered. Bracts oblong, pale green. Flowers large, spreading. Sepals sub equal, obtuse, glabrous, oblong-elliptical, median lobe shortly cucullate, rosy or pink. Petals obliquely oval-triangular, usually purple, 3-nerved, papiltose-velutinous at the inner face. Labellum ± reflected with a large base, having a conical gibbous on each side of the base, largely oboval-sub truncate, notched at apex, with an ovate, acute tooth in the notch, velvety and yellowish-green with the exception of a brownish, glabrous, rhomboid or quadrate spot at base, having a cluster of hairs at the base of the tooth; lateral lobes round, less marked, shortly reflected; midlobe emarginated, entire, large, obtuse, appendaged and glabrous. Gynostemium larger than the petals; rostellum obtuse, notched; stigma rectangular, concave. Anther obovate, obtuse or shortly incurved, Ovary cylindrical, glabrous.  Life Form: G,   Flowering in: Feb-Apr,   Vern:—————-,   Phytochoria: MED , The native range of this species is Medit.  Notes: Wild in Libya.
