Serapias cordigera L., it is a tuberous geophyte, perennial, up to 15-35 cm, glabrous, with globose or ovoid tubers, usually sessile. Leaves lanceolate, with lower sheaths spotted with red. Flowers wine red, large, 3-8 in short, oval spike, initially dense. Bracts ovate-lanceolate, barely equaling or slightly exceeding the flowers, internal divisions with wavy edges, labellum provided at the base with 2 divergent calluses, tongue almost as wide as the lateral lobes combined, oval with acuminate heart, quite dark red, hairy above.  Life Form: G,   Flowering in: Mar-May,   Vern:——————,   Phytochoria: MED, The native range of this species is Azores, S. Central Europe to Medit.   Notes: Wild in Libya.
