Tulipa sylvestris L. / Infraspecific; Tulipa sylvestris ssp. sylvestris, Tulipa sylvestris ssp. australis (Link) Pamp. // Heterotypic Synonyms; Tulipa sylvestris var. mediterranea Pamp, it is a bulbous geophyte, perennial, with 1-3 ovoid bulbs, 1.5-3 cm diameter, tunics multi-layered coriaceous, dark brown in colour, the innerside covered at base and summet with brown appressed hairs. Stem simple, 20-35 cm high, smooth, glabrous, with showy terminal flower. Leaves 3-4, glaucous, linealr to linear-lanceolate, glabrous, smooth, shorter than stem 0.8-20 0.4-0.8 cm, the longest leaves usually basal. Flowers solitary, yellow-violaceous, segments canaliculate, more or less equal in length, inner 3-4.5 x 1.5-2 <:01, outer 3-4.5 x 0.7-1 cm. all with acuminate tip, white only inner hairy at base or margins, with brown. ± parallel nerves. Stamens ± equal, c.1.5 cm long, filaments entire, densely hairy at base, anthers yellow-brownish, basifixed c. 4 mm long. Ovary angled-elongate, slightly shorter or up to stamens level, with very short style and sub sessile stigma. Capsule acuminate at top. c. 3 x 1.5 cm.  Life Form: G,   Flowering in: Feb-Mar,   Vern: Zumabq,   Phytochoria: ES+MED, The native range of this species is Medit., S. Central & E. Europe to Xinjiang.  Notes: Wild in Libya.
