Vicia sativa L. // Infraspecifics: Vicia sativa ssp. cordata (Wulfen ex Hoppe) Batt., Vicia sativa ssp. sativa, Vicia sativa ssp. nigra Ehrh./ Heterotypic Synonyms: Vicia angustifolia L., Vicia angustifolia Roth,  it is an annual climbing herb, up to 30-80 cm, pubescent. Polymorphic plant. Leaves with 5-7 pairs of broad, truncated or notched leaflets, rowing tendrils, stipules toothed, spotted. Flowers large (2-3 cm), with a purplish standard with purple-brown wings, geminate, rarely solitary, sub sessile. Calyx with equal teeth, equal to the tube. Pods 40-60 mm by 6-10, broad, compressed, bumpy, not stipitate, erect or spreading, puberulent, pale tawny when ripe. Seeds large, subglobose, separated by cellular tissue.   Life Form: Th,   Flowering in: Jan-Apr,   Vern: Jilban ,   Phytochoria: Cosm,  The native range of this species is Macaronesia, N. Africa to Kenya, Temp. Eurasia to Arabian Peninsula.   Notes: Wild in Libya, medicinal plant.
